Consecutive Interpretation Services
Consecutive Interpretation Services consist in interpretation of the spoken word into other languages.
To perform one, the interpreter listens to the orator and takes down notes as an auxiliary. Once the speaker finishes speaking, the interpreter reproduces the message in a different language, with the maximum precision possible. For this reason, this discipline requires great memory, focus, retention, ability to makes inferences, and command of expression.
Differences between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation
Consecutive Interpretation does not reproduce speech alongside the original. The interpreter has at their disposal a limited time period before reproducing the oration. The speaker adds in a pause every 1 to 5 minutes to give the interpreter the chance to communicate what has just been said.
In Simultaneous Interpretation, the interpreter is placed in a sound-proofed pod and relies on a technical equipment system.
In Consecutive Interpretation, the interpreter is seated near the orator. This same interpreter reproduces the message facing the audience.
The Simultaneous Interpeter remains effectively invisible, being stationed within a pod.
The Consecutive Interpreter should be mindful of their physical presence, select suitable attire and keep themselves in the background. The focal point should always revert back to the speaker.
When is Consecutive Interpretation used?
This technique is used to open and close official procedures.
In certain scenarios, Consecutive Interpretation has been superseded by the use of simulaneous interpretation, the latter being much quicker to perform.
